Carmans River is one of the 4 largest rivers on Long Island, stretching nearly 10 miles from Middle Island down to the Great South Bay in Brookhaven.  While it is totally ground water generated, the  lower river south of Montauk Highway is estuary, mixing in with the bay.  It is a beautiful location, flowing through the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge.  Most of the area between Squassux Landing at the southern end and Montuak Highway looks as it probably did hundreds of years ago with no sign of anything man-made.

I took advantage of the clear crisp morning on Friday and took a short flight.  I will have to do it again once the trees get a little more color.
