I checked out Old Inlet on May 14th at dead low tide.  The inlet appears to have filled in quite a bit since my last update on January 31st.  Dr. Flagg of Stony Brook has noted that salinity levels are dropping in Bellport Bay, suggesting that the inlet may be on the verge of closing.  Click here to access his latest report for more detail.   According to Dr. Flagg, all undefended breaches on barrier islands will eventually close so it would not be a terrible surprise.  The inlet has done a fantastic job of cleaning this section of the bay and allowed clams, oysters, fish, seagrass, and wildlife to make a great comeback.  If it does close, it will be sad to see those gains reversed.
