Just before the snow started yesterday,  I noticed a huge raft of Greater Scaup (Bluebill) between Bellport Dock and Howell’s Point.

Greater Scaup breed on the tundra and Boreal Forest zones from Iceland across northern Scandinavia, northern Russia, northern Siberia and the western North American Arctic.  Every winter I see a few large flocks around the Great South Bay.

I heard some hunters around so expected them to flush, when the group is in flight it is an amazing thing to see and hear.
