I then headed west toward Old Inlet to check out the area that broke through yesterday captured by Trish Minogue Collins.  I loved her images and video yesterday and wanted to see this phenomenon for myself.

I wasn’t expecting much as it was still about an hour before high tide but as I went down the beach the waves started burying the beach and reaching the dunes and giving me a few scares.

After yesterday’s story went viral I expected some company but as luck would have it the Police cleared the beach behind be and I had the place to myself!

The overwash channel was running strong and resembled a small river with standing rapids shooting straight down to the bay.  With the close proximity to Old Inlet I can understand why people might be concerned and perhaps they should be, however this same spot has been susceptible to overwash ever since Sandy wiped out the primary dune 5 years ago.

The images below were all taken with my iphone which really don’t do the scene justice.  The sight and sounds of the raging ocean combined with the rushing water over Fire Island was an amazing thing to witness.
