Great Gull Island is a 17 acre island that separates Long Island and Block Island Sounds.   The island was used as a military base between the Spanish-American War through World War II.

It was purchased by the American Museum of Natural History in 1949 and is used to research the largest colony of  nesting Common Terns in the world.
